Barbie Dream House
August 30, 2013
When I was 10 years old, my Dad asked me if I wanted anything special for Christmas. I told him I wanted a Barbie Dream House and a Barbie doll. See, all my friends had Barbie dolls and accessories. I had none. My Dad said he’d see what he could do. This was during the month of June. By Christmas, I had forgotten all about it.
About 2 weeks before Christmas, I came home from school to see a huge box sitting right outside our front door. It had my name on it. In the sender’s space there was my dad’s name. I begged my mom to let me open it. She said okay so I ripped off the wrapping paper and….. TA DA!!! It was a Barbie Dream House!
I screamed and jumped up and down. I started to open the box but my mom stopped me. She said it says “Assembly Required” on the box so I should wait until my older brother got home so he could put it together for me. My brother came home from school an hour later and was not too happy about being volunteered to assemble my new toy. He said he was tired so he would do it the next day.
So, the next day, my Mom sent me out to play while my brother built my Dream House. I couldn’t wait to play with it, I was so excited. Then I realized something. I didn’t remember seeing a Barbie doll. I brushed off the thought, thinking my mom must be hiding it somewhere. After about 3 hours, I went home to get a drink of water. I also wanted to see if my doll house was done. I walked in and LO AND BEHOLD….. There stood my Barbie Dream House in all its glory!
I screamed and jumped up and down- again! My brother was asleep on the living room floor next to the dollhouse. I ran around in circles around the dollhouse, peeking into the little windows and doors. I started to cry tears of joy. Then my joy turned to sadness. “But Mommy, I don’t have a Barbie doll to put in the house”. My mom’s face turned bright red. She shouted at me, ” Just be glad you have your stupid doll house!!!”
It was me who turned bright red now. I started bawling and sobbing, LOUDLY. I didn’t know what I did or said wrong but Mama was mad at me! I ran to my room and threw myself on my bed and cried for an hour.
In January, my Dad came to visit from Maui. He and my mom got into a big argument. I found out years later what they fought about….. turns out my dad and mom made an agreement that he would buy me the doll house and she would buy me the Barbie dolls. But my mom decided I didn’t need them. She thought my dad spoiled me anyway. My dad was PISSED! He accused her of putting partying and alcohol before me. (Mom was an alcoholic.)
A year later we moved to a new place in the same city. My doll house was set up on the dining table for me to play with. I was given a kitten for my 11th birthday. I would put the kitten in the doll house and let it sleep on Barbie’s bed. I still had no Barbie dolls. One of my new friends invited me over to her house on Christmas morning that year. She got a Barbie townhouse and new Barbie dolls and, what seemed like, a million Barbie accessories. I went home and cried.
My older sister came home from the mainland for a visit. She’s a clean freak. One day, while my mom and I went to the grocery store, she bagged up my Dream House and the furniture. She had my brother take it to the Goodwill store donation bin. How I found out…. On the way home from the grocery store my mom and I walked past the same Goodwill store. I saw the doll house in the donation bin and told my mom, ” Look! Someone gave away their Barbie Dream House! Why would they wanna do that?”
When I got home, I saw my doll house was gone. My sister said she didn’t like it taking up so much space in the house so she gave it away. I begged my mom to make her get it back. I threatened to kill her if she didn’t. I screamed, cried and begged for 2 hours straight to no avail.
That’s the true story of my Barbie Dream House.
